World Cup and earthquake safety
I think it's strange that the last time I was in England for all the world cup, I was in year 10 at school. I remember people listening to their walkmans in a chemistry lesson when England was playing a match- sudden gasps meant goals had been scored or nearly netted. There's not all that much hype about it over here. But currently the build up's going for tonight (over here anyway)'s Japan v Australia match.
I was quite glad to be talking to a PE teacher about the world cup earlier today. We were all in the gym at the culmination of an earthquake & fire drill. That itself was quite funny. There was a bell at a set time in the afternoon, at which point all students had to duck under their desks as if there were an earthquake. Then, 20 seconds later, a longer bell rang, which signalled a fire. At which point, everyone had to quick march / run to the gym. The funny thing was, we were told the fire was in the chemistry room, so had to navigate the emergency escape routes with that in mind! When in the gym, the PE teacher beckoned me into the PE office, where by he went online to msn & played back the highlights of the England match. At which point I remembered he coaches the school football team & knows what he's talking about. He looked pretty tired after the first weekend of the tournament (matches are shown live at 10pm, 1am and 4am here.) Watching bits of the match from the tiny screen was much better than being in the school assembly...

There will be an earthquake in England with all the cheering if our brave lads reach the final. Cars and vans everywhere are sporting St George flags, and there has been correspondence in The Times suggesting that the driving ability of an individual is in inverse proportion to the number of flags on his car. Judging by the taxi driver who took us to Heathrow when we visited you, I have seen some evidence to support this harsh verdict.
