school's out for summer- in a way...

I have a funny anti-climatic feeling that's been somewhat expected today. It was the last day of term- wahoo! Roll on the summer holidays....but wait! Here, summer holidays only mean no lessons. Most students come to school every (or most) day for club activities, and I can only take time off from my annual paid leave- kind of. But I've managed to swing it to only be at school for 1 of 5 weeks this summer- quite jammy if you ask me.
But I think the summer feeling is just not the same as back home. In England now, the weather is summer and scorching- no doubt about that. But today here it's been cold and rainy (still rainy season) - if my JTE's prediction holds true though, summer proper will start tomorrow! So the weather doesn't feel like summer. Also, the end of the summer term doesn't mark the end of the academic year here- that happened back in March. So school will carry on as normal in late August. No rushing home with the school report/ celebrating the end of school and start of the summer holiday here!

Tomorrow I'm off on a business trip to another school to teach them about British culture- I plan on introducing a bit of cockney rhyming slang! I'm often surprised how much of it is part of everyday speech (well for me), without realising it. Most especially, porkies [pork pies = lies], donkey's ears = donkey's years, to rabbit [rabbit and pork= talk], and dicky bird [rhymes with word], as well as the degree classifications [Desmond/ Douglas Hurd for 2:2 or third].
After that I have one more -week long- business trip and by then the air conditioning should be coming in handy!
I've discovered that this year- for the 1st time, the school library has air con, the only room in the school with it. Think that'll be a haven for me and many others in the coming weeks!
